The Beginning
The word Arangetram — from the Tamil arangu (stage) and etram (ascending) — literally means "ascending the stage." It is the formal debut performance of a Bharatanatyam student, a deeply sacred milestone that marks the transition from student to performer.
After years of rigorous training, the student presents a full evening concert before an audience for the first time. The recital follows a traditional margam — a sequence of items from the pure abstract to the deeply devotional — guided always by the guru's blessing and the grace of the dance itself.
"It is not merely a performance. It is an offering — of years of devotion, discipline, and love — at the feet of the art."
The Teacher
Bharatanatyam & Kuchipudi Exponent · Nritya Sudha's Hindu Temple Rhythms
Symbolizing the peak of purity and performance, Sudha Chandra Sekhar has been classed with the all-time greats of classical Bharata Natyam and Kuchipudi schools. Meticulous in each portrayal and adhering to the purity of style, she has become one of those rare artists who combines versatility with artistry.
As a dedicated dancer and a rare genius, Sudha has shifted her activities from India to the U.S. and Canada, giving over 7,000 performances throughout India and abroad. She has presented more than 150 students in their classical dance debut — known as Arangetram.
She has taught through the University of Windsor, Wayne State University, Albion College, and the University of Michigan. Her organization, Nritya Sudha's Hindu Temple Rhythms, celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2018.
The Student
Kushi Kanumuri is a 15-year-old freshman at Farmington High School and a devoted disciple of Guru "Natya Bharathi" Smt. Sudha Chandra Sekhar, under whose guidance she began her Bharatanatyam journey at the age of 5. Through years of rigorous training and dedication, she has blossomed into a poised and accomplished dancer, performing at esteemed platforms such as Tandav, the World Dance Festival, and temples across the Metro Detroit area.
Beyond the classical arts, Kushi is equally admired for her passion and commitment to volleyball, where she excels as a dedicated athlete on both her school and club teams. She is a black belt in Karate and enjoys horse riding. A gifted young leader, Kushi has been honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award (2025), the Farmington Schools Award of Excellence, and the Farmington Youth Assistance Recognition Award (2026).
This Arangetram is both a celebration of her accomplishments thus far and a reflection of the grace, perseverance, and excellence she brings to every endeavor.
